What's different about buying this for quick service / counters
Counter service has a shorter version of the food truck problem: the wait is usually measured in minutes rather than tens of minutes, but a busy lunch site can still stack ten or fifteen orders deep, and calling names over the noise of a fast-casual dining room works about as well as it does anywhere else.
Square's built-in order-ready number display covers the short end of this well: an order number on a screen behind the counter, no extra hardware, no extra cost, and for waits under about three minutes it beats anything requiring the customer to check a phone. It stops working once people have gone to grab a table, a drink or a seat outside, because now they cannot see the screen.
That is the gap a browser-based buzzer fills. The customer scans a code at the till, gets a live status page, sits wherever they like, and gets a buzz when the order is up rather than watching a screen or listening for a number. It needs a signal on the customer's own phone, worth noting for basement seating or genuinely dead spots, but for most fast-casual dining rooms that is not the constraint pagers used to be.
Questions people actually ask
- Is a physical pager still worth buying for a counter restaurant?
- Only if your seating area is large enough that customers regularly leave the counter's sightline and your team can manage collecting pagers back reliably. For a small counter and fast turnover, the hardware cost rarely earns its keep.
- Does a browser buzzer need the customer to download anything?
- No. A QR code opens a web page, which is the whole appeal; asking a lunch queue to install an app before they can order is a fast way to lose them.
