Mobile ordering for a coffee shop

Scored and compared prices dated

The short answer

The operational challenge with café ordering ahead is timing, not volume: a drink made too early goes cold before the customer arrives, made too late and they are standing there waiting anyway. Whichever system you use, check that it lets you buffer prep time against a stated arrival rather than firing the ticket the instant the order lands.

What's different about buying this for coffee shop / cafés

Order-ahead for coffee is a slightly different problem than order-ahead for food. A burrito holds fine for ten minutes; a flat white does not, and a customer who ordered five minutes before arriving expects it hot and ready at the counter, not sitting there or not started yet.

Square, Clover, Lightspeed and SpotOn all sell an ordering add-on against their own POS, and the practical difference between them here is less about the ordering page itself and more about whether your team can configure a sensible prep-time buffer so drinks are made close to pickup rather than the moment the order arrives.

Otter is worth a look specifically if you are also running third-party delivery apps for coffee and pastries, aggregating those alongside your own ordering, though for a café whose order-ahead volume is mostly regulars skipping the queue, the simpler first-party option from your POS vendor is usually enough.

Questions people actually ask

01
How do I stop drinks sitting out and going cold?
Look for a prep-time buffer setting that holds the ticket until close to the stated pickup time rather than firing it immediately on order. Not every system offers this cleanly, so check it in a demo.
02
Is mobile ordering worth it for a small independent café?
Usually, for regulars who want to skip a queue, provided the timing problem above is solved. It is less valuable if most of your trade is casual walk-ins rather than repeat customers ordering ahead.
